Community Marine Biodiversity Online Register to Launch on World Oceans Day

The Community Marine Biodiversity Online Register (CMBOR) is a digital platform that documents the marine ecosystems, underwater habitats, and coastal biodiversity of Kerala. Developed by Friends of Marine Life (FML), the register combines scientific research, traditional fisher knowledge, photographs, videos, and species records to promote ocean literacy, marine conservation, and public access to marine biodiversity information.

A groundbreaking initiative to document and celebrate the rich marine ecosystems and biodiversity of Kerala's southern coastline is set to be launched on World Oceans Day, June 8. The Community Marine Biodiversity Online Register (CMBOR), developed by Friends of Marine Life (FML), aims to make valuable marine biodiversity information freely accessible to researchers, students, conservationists, policymakers, and the general public.

A Digital Window into Kerala's Underwater World

The online register showcases the diverse marine habitats and coastal biodiversity of the Thiruvananthapuram coast, bringing together scientific research, community knowledge, photographs, videos, and species records in a single digital platform.

The initiative is designed not only as a biodiversity database but also as a tool for ocean literacy, helping people understand and appreciate the hidden ecosystems that exist beneath the waves.

Bridging Traditional Knowledge and Science

One of the unique strengths of the register is its integration of traditional ecological knowledge from local fishing communities with scientifically verified information. By combining generations of observations from fishers with data from marine researchers and institutions, the platform creates a more comprehensive understanding of coastal ecosystems.

The project has received support from several organizations and institutions working in marine conservation, fisheries, and ocean research.

Rich Multimedia Documentation

The register contains:

  • Detailed information on marine species found along the coast

  • Underwater habitat documentation

  • High-quality photographs of marine life and ecosystems

  • More than 200 species-related videos

  • Over 50 underwater habitat videos

  • Records of numerous underwater ecosystems identified along the Thiruvananthapuram coastline

This extensive collection offers visitors an opportunity to explore Kerala's underwater biodiversity without entering the sea.

Promoting Marine Conservation Through Awareness

The primary goal of the initiative is to increase public awareness about marine ecosystems and encourage community participation in conservation efforts. By making biodiversity information openly accessible, the platform hopes to inspire greater appreciation for marine habitats and the need to protect them from environmental threats.

The register also serves as a valuable resource for students, educators, researchers, environmental organizations, and government agencies involved in coastal management and marine conservation.

Why This Matters

Marine ecosystems play a critical role in supporting fisheries, protecting coastlines, maintaining ecological balance, and sustaining coastal livelihoods. Yet many of these habitats remain poorly documented and largely unknown to the public.

The launch of the Community Marine Biodiversity Online Register represents an important step toward preserving marine knowledge, supporting scientific research, and fostering a stronger connection between communities and the ocean.

As World Oceans Day reminds us, protecting the ocean begins with understanding it—and initiatives like CMBOR make that understanding accessible to everyone.
