സ്രാവുകൾ

കടലിലെ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക സ്രാവുകളും ഒരുകാലത്ത് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തും ലഭിക്കുമായിരുന്നു.എന്നാൽ ഇന്ന് അത് നൂറിൽ 1% ആയി കുറഞ്ഞു എന്ന് വേണം പറയാൻ. ചില സ്രാവുകളുടെ അനുഭവ കഥകൾ കടലറിവും നേരനുഭവങ്ങളും അഥവാ eyes on their fingertips എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. സ്രാവുകളുടെ ചിറകുകളെ സ്രാപ്പീലി or പറക്ക് എന്നിങ്ങനെ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു.ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ട് മുമ്പ് ഇവിടത്തെ തീര ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിൽ “സ്രാപ്പീലി കുത്തക” എന്ന സംവിധാനം നില നിന്നിരുന്നു.അതായത് കടൽ പണിക്കാർക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്ന സ്രാവുകളുടെ ഏറ്റവും വിലപിടിച്ച ചിറകുകൾ അക്കാലത്ത് തീരദേശം നിയന്ത്രിച്ചിരുന്ന വിദേശ കത്തോലിക്ക മിഷണറിമാർക്ക് കരമായി നൽകിയിരുന്ന നാടാണ് തിരുവനന്തപുരം. കഴിഞ്ഞ പത്ത് വർഷമായി നടന്നുവരുന്ന എഫ് എം എല്ലിന്റെ അണ്ടർ വാട്ടർ ഡോക്യുമെന്റേഷനിൽ ഉടുമ്പ് സ്രാവ് അഥവാ ബാംബു ഷാർക്ക് എന്നൊരു ഇനത്തെ മാത്രമാണ് കാണാനായത്. അവയാകട്ടെ നമ്മൾ സാധാരണ ധരിക്കുമ്പോലെ അല്ല. മടിയന്മാരും പേടിത്തൊണ്ടന്മാരും ആണെന്ന് വേണം പറയാൻ. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ മത്സ്യമായ തിമിംഗലസ്രാവ് അഥവാ Whale Shark കൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറെ വർഷങ്ങളായി തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ തീരങ്ങളിൽ എത്താറുണ്ട്.ശാന്തമായ പ്രകൃതമുള്ള ഇവ അബദ്ധത്തിൽ കമ്പവലകളിൽ അഥവാ ഷോർ സീനുകളിൽ വീഴുകയും അവയെ തൊഴിലാളികൾ വലമുറിച്ച് തിരികെ കടലിലേക്ക് വിടുകയുമാണ് പതിവ് . ഇതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് വൈൽഡ് ലൈഫ് ട്രസ്റ്റ്‌ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ നടത്തിവരുന്ന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ പ്രത്യേകം അഭിനന്ദനങ്ങൾ അർഹിക്കുന്നു.

Sharks

Most of the shark species in the ocean used to be present in the Thiruvananthapuram sea at a time. However, it has reduced to a mere 1% at present. Some of the experiences with sharks have been mentioned in my book "Eyes on their finger tips". The shark fins were known by the names "sraappeeli"or"parakku", etc. A century ago, in the coastal villages of Thiruvananthapuram, there was a tradition known as "the sraappeeli kutthaka ". The most valuable of the fins from the hunted sharks were given as taxes to the foreign missionaries who had control over the coastal regions. In FML's underwater documentation spanning over a decade, we have only come across the "udumbu sraavu" or "bamboo shark". They are unlike any behaviour we may assume about sharks, being lazy and scared. World's largest fish, the Whale shark, has been seen frequently near the Thiruvananthapuram coast in recent years. Generally calm in nature, these fish get accidentally caught in shore seine nets and the fishers release them back into the sea by cutting the net. The work done by Wildlife Trust of India revolving whale sharks is quite commendable.
